Inspiration for the Song

The creation account in Genesis reveals that what the man wanted more than anything else in the world was “a help similar to himself” (Gen. 2:20).

What does this mean?

John Paul II suggests that what Adam desired was a person, a being like himself, with whom he could express love, the kind of love “in which the human person becomes a gift and—through this gift—fulfills the very meaning of his being and existence” (TOB 15:1).

To fulfill the man’s desire, God causes a deep sleep to fall upon the man.

Imagine Adam’s state of mind as he is laid to rest. He has just finished naming all the animals and has not found one that was “similar to himself”. The deepest desire of his heart is to give himself away in love to another person like himself, and to be received in love by another person. Yet, he has no special “somebody” with whom he can fulfill this desire.

Perhaps this miserable state causes the man to sleep as if from sadness. It is a sleep that is so deep that the man approaches his return to non-being. God takes out a rib from the man and makes it into a woman.

John Paul II reflects that Adam falls into this sleep overcome with the desire of finding a being similar to himself. Since the narrative speaks of “sleep,” one can also imagine a corresponding dream? If so, can the substance of this dream be anything but a beautiful sublime creature who is just as deep and personal as the man who is dreaming?
