Child from the Lord

Inspiration for the Song

A Husband and wife are called to form a spousal communion of persons.

When they take one another in their arms and become one flesh, they renew in themselves the meaning of the human person as “image of God.” This is because a man and woman become the image of God when they form a communion of person in imitation of the divine communion of Persons.

In every act of procreation, both man and woman “take this image [of God] again, so to speak, from the mystery of creation and transmit it ‘with the help of God-Yahweh’” (TOB 21:7).

For this reason, a new life in the womb cannot simply be thought of as a small practically insignificant biological event.

A newly created human life is also a spiritual reality since it has been imprinted with the image of God. God breathes his divine spark into the human matter from the husband and wife to create an unrepeatable person who is destined for great things.

The tiny new life has cosmic consequences.

With the conception of her first child, the first woman sensed the mystery of creation that enveloped her womb.

“I have acquired a man with the help of the LORD,” said Eve (Gen. 4:1).

Eve immediately recognized that this new life within her was not her own body. This new life was not a “product of her reproductive right.” Eve recognized the humanity of the life within her womb. She received it as a gift from the Lord.

Every child, whether created in the terrible act of rape, or in the loving embrace of a husband and wife, is a unique unrepeatable gift from the Lord.

As the place where the mystery of creation is made present, the womb itself becomes a sacred and profound place. It may not being going too far to think of the womb as the temporary chamber of God himself who takes the parents’ humble matter—sperm and egg—and transforms it into a person who bears his own image and likeness.
