Exultation Before Eve

Inspiration for the Song

Today’s sociologists declare that behavioural differences between men and women are something socially contrived, something artificially constructed. This is put forward despite the physiological and the psychological differences between males and females. The name “convention” is used to explain “sex roles” and “gender behaviours.” It is outdated today—if not discriminatory—to claim that to be a human being means to belong to one of two sexes, either male or female. This traditional distinction is seen as “too restrictive” to convey today’s ideas of androgyne, genderqueerness, intersexuality, pangender, and transgender.

Divine revelation counters today’s progressive ideas with a simple—yet profound—truth. God created human beings as “male and female” (Gen. 1:27).

From the beginning human beings were “male and female”. “Male and female” they are now. And “male and female” they shall ever be, despite the ingenuity of the human mind in inventing clever ways of thinking about the matter.

What belongs to the “male” with his masculinity, and to the “female” with her femininity, is something gifted to human beings by God. When God created the man and woman in his image and likeness, He gifted them not only with exterior differences, but also with interior differences. What is more, the exterior differences are a sign of the interior ones.

For the man, his procreative parts hang outside his body. This is a sign of the man’s interior disposition of going out into the world and making a place for himself and his family. He is the lumber jack, the fireman, the one who stays behind on the sinking Titanic. His domain is the external visible world, and he boldly moves about in it with ease and confidence.

For the woman, her procreative parts are invisibly protected inside her body. This is a sign of the woman’s interior disposition of creating a place in the world where hidden and invisible things can flourish. She is the heart of the home, the centre of love, the one who nurtures and nourishes the human soul. She is a master of the personal dimension and a genius with relationship. Her domain is the interior invisible heart, and she tenderly moves about in it with ease and confidence.

These differences are precisely what makes it possible for a man and a woman to enter into a most meaningful and satisfying relationship. In God’s plan, men and women are not only compatible with one another, they are necessary to one another. The union of a man and a woman is the joining of the interior with the exterior, the heart with the head. The difference is really the cause of the unity that is experienced between a man and a woman in love.

For the first man, the male/female compatibility was extremely apparent when he beheld the created woman for the first time. Upon waking up from sleep he joyfully exclaims at finding a being who is different from himself, but also similar in many ways.

“At last, she is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh” (Gen. 2:23).

For the first time in his existence, the man shows joy and even exultation. It is joy for the other human being that permeates the words of the man upon seeing the woman.

Review

“I want to compliment you on a very beautiful CD. We listen to it frequently.

I especially love the piece about Adam's joy at the creation of Eve.

This is a stunningly lovely collection—and a great tool for evangelization, too! People can deepen their appreciation of the Theology of the Body while listening to soul-satisfying music.”
