Fiat

Inspiration for the Song

Mary exemplifies what wondrous things can happen when one becomes humble and submissive before God and His plan.

Being submissive is not a negation of human freedom nor is it a belittling of what it means to be a person. Rather, it is the most radical expression of what it means to be human, namely by trustingly placing one’s heart, soul, and mind into the care of someone else. This expression of what it means to be human is the paradox of dying in order to live, of giving away in order to receive more fully.

Mary’s total gift of self through her fiat—let it be done to me!—allows her to receive the fullness of life. The Holy Spirit “overshadows” her and God himself comes to dwell inside her own body. Mary discovers the very meaning of human existence through her fiat whereby she becomes a gift and through that gift expresses love to God. Her free act of offering herself to God—her fertility, her womb, her very body—is her beautiful expression of living most profoundly the spousal meaning of the body. Her total surrender of herself to God bore for her and the entire world the fruit of eternal life. Life Himself entered her womb and made all things new.

Mary, in becoming the mother of God though her fiat, is a superabundant revelation of the fruitfulness that comes from the Holy Spirit when the human person freely submits his or her spirit to the intention and design of God (TOB 75.3).

Review

“Our hearts have been laid bare and profoundly touched. You have been given a great gift, the Church universal needs a 21st century “music master” to add to its great repository of music, to its ancient history.

Your music is a flower blooming on a winter night, cold and still.

Music is serious and profound theology with the ability to uplift and transport one to places we perhaps had not dared to dream of.

Thank you! Every day compose and play on!”
